CSS lesson 12 “Table Properties”

With CSS rules you can setup the layout of a table. You can control what is around the table, and of course, the colors. The table can choose to show certain borders and if it has a margin or not. Some borders for tables may include dashed, groove, and solid. These are just some generic types of borders. You can also adjust the widths of the borders. In the cells, you can control where the content will be, centered, top, bottom, etc. You can also control other basic aspects of the table such as content font colors. It is kind of a combination between all of the other elements.

Lists can altered in many ways using CSS. first of all you can change what type of lists, whether its ordered, or unordered. Unordered lists use bullets for list items, while ordered lists use numbers and letters to recognize list items. You can change types of bullets,types of letters, and types of numbers. If you want to you can also use pictures instead of bullets. The picture itself will be the button, link, or list item. You can also change the padding between each list item. If you want to you can also control whether the list is indented or not. You can also change generic text items using other properties.

The padding is used for putting spaces between borders and content, in the box diagram. The padding looks to the background for its color. It does practically the same things as the borders. You can again change the widths of the borders by using pixels. They are good for separating elements to give them even more defined space.

CSS lesson 9 “Margin”

The margin property defines the space around the content or element you are showing. It is completely transparent but will separate your elements. The only thing you really have to worry about changing is the widths. You can adjust the sides independently or all together depending on what you want to do. The shortest way to to write codes for all different sides is: margin: 20px, 30px, 40px, 50px. 20 will be the top, 30 left, 40 bottom, and 50 left.

Outlines are used for making things stand out. You can change colors, outline styles, and widths. You can add specific styles to each component of your website.

CSS lesson 7 “Border”

In this lesson I learned about how you can effect the borders of your websites. You can adjust many things like colors and border types. You can do general borders like border: dashed, or border: red. You can also set up multiple dashes and lines to give each side of the border a different design. You just have to list four different types of lines then it will go top, right, bottom, and left. You can also control things such as the thickness of the borders as well.

CSS lesson 6 “Box Model”

The box model is the basic format for CSS styling. It has four aspects: content, padding, border, and margin. Content is where your images and paragraphs are shown. Padding is where you set an area between the border and the content. This is so you can separate and distinguish between the two. Borders are for creating boxes around areas so you can separate the different content you have. Margins separate backgrounds from borders. Margins are transparent but it will clear that area aroundd the border. All these elements have to fit within the master width of the web page. If you have to much width in your other elements everything will be screwed up. They have to be equal all together to the master width. It is the same thing with the master height. They have to be equal.

CSS lesson 5 “Fonts”

Using CSS you can change your font in headers and paragraphs. This mostly sets up what type of font the words will be in and also what sizes the fonts will be. When dealing with fonts you have to know generic families and font families. This is so if the browser cannot recognize your font it has a fallback. For example you would say {font: “times new roman”, serif} It would first try to use times new roman font then if it could not recognize that font it would fall back to the generic family, or serif. The other big thing you change is font sizes. There are many ways to do this. First of all, you can set absolute sizes or relative sizes. Relative sizes are more useful because it will adjust with more browsers than just being in one. You can set percentages for sizes so that it will adjust to the browsers percentage for their normal settings. For example 125% would be 25% larger for each browser’s normal setting. The most common and easy way to change the size of the texts is using ‘ems’ 1 Em is equal to the width of 1 letter with the normal size of the browser. It is recognized by all browsers including IE, so most web designers use it. That is pretty much the major things you change in the font.

CSS text properties define the appearances of the text. Some properties you can change are fonts, colors, alignment, decoration, and spacing. Colors are self explanatory; you can change what color the text is. With the fonts, you can change type of writing and if the writing is bold or italicized. Alignment will control if the text is centered or on the side of the screen. Decoration controls if the text has fancy parts to it. One of these things is shadowing, and another is uppercase/lowercase. With this property you can go even more in detail with you fonts, making them your own. There are other properties you can change but those are the main ones.

CSS lesson 3 “Background”

There are five background effects that CSS can do: color, image, repeat, attachment, and position. You can insert colors and images into the background of the website. You can set colors and images to repeat themselves horizontally or vertically. With attachment you can set if the background scrolls with the page or not. Position can control where the background is on the page. Whether it’s behind the text or only at the top right, etc. Those are the things you can change in the background.
